Myro Deodorant Chill Wave Review 2020 | Refillable, Reusable Deodorant Stick

Myro Deodorant Chill Wave Review 2020 | Refillable, Reusable Deodorant Stick

The Top Line:

Not a buy — We will keep looking. The Myro Deodorant felt very similar on our skin to the Public Goods Deodorant we’ve reviewed, except it comes with a refill option. We like that — but it’s too expensive to be zero waste here, so it’s a no from us. However, if you’re willing to pay 50% more for the ability to refill, Myro appears to be one of the only options. [Updated 20 August for coupons and pricing.]

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: [SALE] $5 for subscriptions. Otherwise: $15 for the reusable case and a starter; $15 for all refills, plus $5 shipping.
Subscription is pretty flexible (you can postpone and cancel) and way cheaper — $30 per shipment of 3 refills every 3, 4, 6 months and then shipping is free (smaller carbon footprint).

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? The permanent case is plastic and so is the refill — the pod uses 50% less plastic than typical deodorant sticks and is recyclable.

  • Packaging: Honestly, it was nice and special but it felt a little excessive.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: The website has a lot of “stuff” on it for 1 real product. Much clicking occurred to add the product to my cart. Shipping is free if you subscribe, but $5 if not.

  • Good to know: You have to create an account. You will get several emails from them - and they will all be related to updating your order. No newsletters have arrived. We think we like the over-communication.

  • The Want-it-All bundle is not worth it - you are overpaying in order to get the pouch and get out of a subscription.

  • What’s Your Impact? By using pod refills, you reduce waste by 50% each time you refill over standard deodorants.

The Experience & Efficacy

Context: We have been trying to ween ourselves away from potentially toxic chemicals for the last two years. We’ve previously reviewed other natural deodorants from Hammond Herbs (zero-waste) and Public Goods.

  • The packaging was nice but excessive — though everything is cardboard.

  • A pin was included. Yea, a little weird.

  • Putting the refill into the case was a little tough - you really gotta jam it in there. Once it’s in, it’s secure.

  • Application is smooth, very similar to the Public Goods deodorant.

  • Needs a moment to dry, as it feels a touch sticky.

  • Overall, we really like the texture.

  • Chill Wave scent is a bit like that cucumber-melon from back in the day - but it is subtle.

  • Ingredients are vegetable (not petroleum) based and cruelty-free.

  • Did its job in terms of blocking B. O. (and even kept us a little drier than normal “natural” deodorants).

The Cost

There seems to be no middle ground when it comes to how much deodorant a person uses per year. So, we used the best numbers we could: the average user of underarm deodorant/antiperspirant uses between two and twelve sticks per year. We compared Myro to a number of other popular deodorant brands:

Money Report: Not cheap being zero waste here... Not even a little bit, even with the subscription-based model. Note that Public Goods natural deodorant, while we love it, is not refillable.

The Good:

Glides on well

Case is pretty cool and secure

Chill wave scent is subtle and smells ok (we don’t love “cucumber” scent, personal taste)

Non-petroleum based ingredients & cruelty free

Kept us stink-free and a touch drier than previous “natural” deodorants

Refill pod is recyclable

Reusable case is very easy to use

The Bad:

So pricey - like all of the zero-waste, natural deodorants that we have come across so far

Have to commit to a subscription to get the slightly better pricing

Our Recommendation:
Based largely on price, and a few nuisances with the website, as well as our distaste for subscriptions, we are going to say that Myro deodorant is NOT a buy. Though, if we had to choose between using Hammond Herbs forever and Myro forever, we would pick Myro because the product feels better on our skin over the 100% zero waste Hammond Herbs option.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
