Grove Collaborative Floor Cleaner Review 2020 | Floor Cleaning Concentrate, Orange & Rosemary
The Top Line:
BUY. Grove Collaborative’s orange & rosemary floor cleaner concentrate tubes are a buy. We could not find other small packaging for floor cleaners - everything was full, diluted solution.
For the cleaning power, high reduction in plastics (as well as carbon from shipping), and for the light scent. We like what Grove Collaborative is doing with the cleaning concentrates. Two things we wish: (1) the tubes were recyclable and (2) the concentrate had fewer chemical ingredients.
The Breakdown:
Cost & Products: $6.95 for a set of 2 ; Note: there is a $20 annual membership fee that kicks in after the first three months.
How ‘Clean’ Is This? Somewhat clean; lacks harsh chemicals but still has a bunch of items that are impossible to pronounce. Scent is 100% essential oils, though.
Packaging: Supposedly responsible packaging - tube is not recyclable but the box is.
Purchasing & Shipping: We have ordered from Grove Collaborative three times. The desktop site is growing on us and is better than mobile, but still not intuitive to navigate.
PSA: The subscriptions are applied automatically. There is a ton of flexibility - but it’s on you to remember. If you try to order before your next due shipment, all of the items are pre-loaded into your cart. We like the thought behind it, but would prefer opt-in versus opt-out.
Good to know: Refills and subscription is the name of the game at Grove Collaborative. They try to reduce packaging but sometimes unsuccessfully.
Grove Collaborative is a B-corporation. Normal corporations have a goal to make more money for their owners. B-Corps do that too, but they also set specific, social and ethical goals such as governance, environment, and workers. Read about Grove Collaborative’s goals here.
Coupons: None that we know if - but you get a hefty amount of gifts the first time you order.
What’s Your Impact? No more large bottles for floor cleaner going to the landfill. If you use Swiffer or other disposable mops, that could mean reducing 4 to 5 tubs of refills per year that go into landfill, not to mention the clothes themselves.
The Experience
Context: We switched to reusable mop pads and reviewed them here. We used to be a Swiffer household. We tried one other floor cleaner from the grocery stores and did not like how strongly it smelled of chemicals, which led us to Grove Collaborative.
We reused the drugstore floor cleaning bottle for the concentrate mixture.
Learned from our Grove Collaborative glass cleaning concentrate that the little tubes squirt and leak on opening, we held the tube totally pointed side up so that nothing would spill (a drop or two still got away).
Spray and mop is our strategy - and it works just fine.
Once mixed with water, the orange & rosemary scent was extremely light - we liked that.
The Cost
Comparing Grove Collaborative’s concentrate to other bottle floor cleaners like Method, Bona, and Rejuvenate. We could not find any concentrated floor cleaners — only spray bottle versions with refills.
Money Report: Rejuvenate crushes everyone in terms of price - but otherwise Grove Collaborative is in line with the others when it comes to price.
The Good:
✔ No harsh chemicals
✔ Very light scent
✔ Drastic reduction in plastic and fuel usage (for shipping heavy liquid!)
✔ Cleans well
✔ One of the only floor concentrates this small that we can find on the market
The Bad:
✗ Not the absolute cheapest option — but on par with Method
Our Recommendation:

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
