Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Sun Milk Tinted Face Lotion SPF 30 Review | Cruelty-Free, Mineral Facial Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Sun Milk Tinted Face Lotion SPF 30 Review | Cruelty-Free, Mineral Facial Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropics Tinted Mineral Sunscreen in SPF 30 review: we've been wearing it under makeup.

The Top Line:

Overall, Hawaiian Tropics Tinted Mineral Face Sunscreen with SPF 30 is a buy. Because of the tint, the cast is a bit less noticeable, especially if you blend with foundation. The texture is still liquid (‘milky’) and more easily spreadable compared to other products we’ve tried. In terms of cost, Pipette is a much better deal, but for a tinted sunscreen, the Hawaiian Tropics Mineral is right in the middle in terms of price, which may be worth it given the tint.

A note from TRRA: We plan to bring you a few more mineral and reef-friendly sunscreens in the coming months as we are finally hitting warmer weather here in the northern hemisphere! As always, drop us a note if you have products that you would like to see reviewed!

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $17.99 for TWO 1.7oz bottles

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Very similar to the Hawaiian Tropics Sun Milk which we reviewed, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are the active ingredients. While there are a ton of multi-letter chemical words, they are generally deemed safe. However, the sunscreen does contain Fragrance.

  • Packaging: Most sunscreen is going to come in a plastic tube, unfortunately.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Amazon!

  • Good to know: The link above is 2 for $17.99, but there is a single one for $11.75

  • What’s Your Impact? While there is some healthy debate, mineral sunscreens tend to be better for you and for the environment compared to most chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens tend to be much more reef-friendly as chemical sunscreens can kill aquatic life.

The Good:

Reef-friendly and cruelty-free

Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are active ingredients

Thinner consistency versus other mineral sunscreen

Relatively affordable

The subtle tint is a bit more easy to blend than the solid white

The Bad:

Even better regarding the low cast than the basic Hawaiian Sun Milk, but there is only one shade

The Experience

Context: We have been trying to use mineral sunscreens especially when we are going for a run or just doing some work outside (aka - we aren’t expected to look our best!). However, since this particular Hawaiian Tropics Mineral Sunscreen is tinted, we tried it for every day. We would love to find more mineral sunscreens that we can use on a daily basis and would be available for more skin tones. Pipette, ThinkSport, and Raw Elements are some of the previous brands we have tried.

  • We have been using this sunscreen for work or going out.

  • It’s still slightly tacky, but much better than other sunscreens. Given the tint (and we use foundation), it blends in a bit better.

  • While close, the tint doesn’t match our skin and imagine it could still be visible on much lighter or darker tones.

The Cost

We assume that you will use just as much mineral sunscreen as you would any other sunscreen. Here we compare Hawaiian Tropics Mineral Face Sunscreen with Pipette, MD Solar Sciences, Sun Bum, Australian Gold, Cerave, and La Roche-Posay sunscreens.

Money Report: Not bad! Not great either, but we think the tint may be worth it for people w ho want a fighting chance to blend the mineral face sunscreen into their makeup. Hawaiian Tropics Mineral Tinted Face Sunscreen lands right in the middle in terms of cost.

Our Recommendation:

Overall, Hawaiian Tropics Tinted Mineral Face Sunscreen with SPF 30 is a buy. Because of the tint, the cast is a bit less noticeable, especially if you blend with foundation. The texture is still liquid (‘milky’) and more easily spreadable compared to other products we’ve tried. In terms of cost, Pipette is a much better deal, but for a tinted sunscreen, the Hawaiian Tropics Mineral is right in the middle in terms of price, which may be worth it given the tint.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
