Seaweed Bath Co Dewy Skin Face Lotion SPF 30 Review 2024 | Zinc Oxide Mineral Sunscreen

Seaweed Bath Co Dewy Skin Face Lotion SPF 30 Review 2024 | Zinc Oxide Mineral Sunscreen

Seaweed Bath Co Dewy Skin Mineral Face Sunscreen: We’ve been wearing this sunscreen under our makeup. Here is our review.

The Top Line:

Mixed. We hesitate to recommend Seaweed Bath Co Face Dewy Face Lotion with SPF given the ingredients that have come to light as well as its cost. We absolutely love the spreadability of the sunscreen and adore the dewy texture it leaves our skin. We also love that it is SPF 30 and that it contains more Zinc Oxide than typical sunscreens, thus relying more on the mineral elements. We will update the article as we learn more.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $17.98 on Amazon, normally $26.99 and on the Seaweed Bath Co website

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Starting with 20.8% Zinc Oxide, the product is a mineral sunscreen, it has a very high mineral concentration (great news), however not 100% mineral. We applaud the company for not claiming it as such, since it does contain a compound called Butyloctyl Salicylate which acts as a booster to mineral susncreens.

The writing on this ingredient is mixed, though essentially it may act as a chemical UV filter. Additionally, Butyloctyl Salicylate can be found in makeup as one of its properties is that it makes products more easily spreadable.

  • Packaging: Plastic tube — we bought ours IRL at Whole Foods.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Amazon

  • Good to Know: Here is a Bloomberg article on the ingredient in question.

  • What’s Your Impact? Mineral sunscreens are better for the oceanic environment and possibly a bit better for your own skin.

The Good:

Super spreadable formula, not tacky

Virtually no white cast!

Leaves skin dewy, as promised

Works well under makeup

SPF 30 via 20.8% Zinc Oxide

The Bad:

Questionable ingredient (Butyloctyl Salicylate)

The Experience

Context: Southern California requires vigilant use of sunscreen. We have been usingmineral sunscreens especially when we are going for a run or just doing some work outside (aka - we aren’t expected to look our best!). We would love to find more mineral sunscreens that we can use on a daily basis and would be available for more skin tones. Pipette, ThinkSport, and Raw Elements are some of the previous brands we have tried. Here is our experience with Seaweed Bath Co Face Sunscreen:

  • The lightest scent is detectable in the product.

  • Glides on seamlessly all over our face.

  • Feels absorbed, but leaves skin dewy as promised!

  • Works very well under makeup.

  • We loved using this product.

The Cost

We assume that you will use just as much mineral sunscreen as you would any other sunscreen. Here we compare Seaweed Bath Co Face Sunscreen with Pipette, MD Solar Sciences, Sun Bum, Australian Gold, Cerave, and La Roche-Posay sunscreens.

Money Report: Whew, even on sale at Amazon, Seaweed Bath Co Face Sunscreen is one of the more expensive sunscreens on our list, though not quite as bad as La Roche-Posay.

Our Recommendation:

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
