Ingredients Matter Lemongrass Laundry Soap Review | Natural Alternative Laundry Powder

The Top Line:

MAYBE buy. We like Ingredients Matter Laundry Soap Powder for our tougher wash loads like towels and denim. With safe ingredients, mostly paper packaging, and a lovely scent, we could keep it on our laundry shelf. The cost is near the lower end and we like that you can be flexible with how much detergent to use (unlike laundry pods). The only drawback is using the powder on delicate cycles with cold water: the granules do not dissolve all the way.

Check out our Laundry Roundup here.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: 72 Load Laundry Soap Powder for $16.99. 10% off for any subscriptions.

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Very clean! Only a few ingredients and each one is not really a concern. The Fragrance-Free option doesn’t even contain any essential oils.

  • Packaging: Mostly paper/cardboard. The plastic item was the scooper inside the powder (for measuring) as well as lining in the bag has a plastic seal.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: We bought on their website, which has free shipping. It’s also available on Amazon, but at a higher cost!

  • What’s Your Impact? No more thick plastic jugs of liquid detergent. The powder is fairly concentrated, so overall the carbon footprint is much smaller. In addition to that, no toxic parts: limited ingredients, all of which are generally considered clean.

The Good:

Limited Ingredients that are generally safe

Very nice lemongrass scent that is from essential oils

Competitive pricing!

Laundry powder - so you can control if you want a little or a lot of soap!

The Bad:

Still some plastic via the scoop and the lining of the bag (way less than the heavy plastic jugs!)

Some flakes remain when using on a cold, delicate cycle, unfortunately

The Experience

Context: Prior to going even greener, we have used the normal Seventh Generation (powder and liquid), Tide, and Method. For stains, we are still using OxiClean’s stain remover here and there. We washed all kinds of clothes and items, at different temperatures, with Ingredients Matter Laundry Soap.

  • Scent is light and lovely (we like lemongrass).

  • Unfortunately, when washing delicates on cold, the soap powder does not dissolve all the way. We are trying to figure out whether to use less soap, wash on a stronger cycle, or use warmer water. Only the first one is ideal.

  • For normal washes, clothes come out great, and smelling fresh!

  • We like using it on sheets, towels, and anything else that doesn’t need to be run on the delicate cycle

The Cost

Context: We assumed that the average household of 4 will generate 7 loads of laundry per week or 365 loads per year! We will compare Ingredients Matterto a long list of other detergents like Meliora, Charlie’s, Cleancult, Dropps, and Sheets Laundry Club, as well as more common drugstore brands.

Money Report: Really good pricing for Ingredients Matter Laundry Soap! It’s not the absolute cheapest of the bunch, but definitely competitive when it comes to pricing.

Our Recommendation:

The cost is near the lower end and we like that you can be flexible with how much detergent to use (unlike laundry pods). The only drawback is using the powder on delicate cycles with cold water: the granules do not dissolve all the way.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
