WELdental Chewtab Whitening Toothpaste Tablets with nHap | Zero Waste Toothpaste

WELdental Chewtab Whitening Toothpaste Tablets with nHap | Zero Waste Toothpaste

The Top Line:

MIXED - if you can afford the extra cost (about $100 per year, per person), then the WELdental Chewtab Toothpaste tablets with Whitening and nHap are great. Like with other zero waste toothpaste like Bite and Chomp, the hurdle is how expensive the toothpaste tablets are. All of the pros are: a fluoride alternative (NHAP), cruelty-free (not tested on animals), whitening, and zero-waste (cardboard, paper and glass packaging). Quality wise, we like WELdental Chewtabs (we just may try peppermint next time instead of cinnamon 🙃).

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: Glass bottle of 60 tablets, containing nHap $12.95 in Cinnamon. Also comes in Peppermint and Bubble Gum. Refills of 180 tablets cost $24.95.

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Zero Plastic. Ingredients are pretty clean and contain Nano Hydroxyapatite (nHap)

  • Packaging: Tablets come in a glass bottle - and they shipped in a small cardboard box. Zero-waste!

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Shipping is free for purchases over $19. Relatively easy to navigate on the site but a little heads up: the WELdental website looks like it was created for originally professionals.

  • Note: also available on Amazon.

  • Good to know: They sell other types of dental tablets that do not contain nHap nor whitening.

WELdental Toothpaste Tablets have xylitol in it. Safe (and possibly beneficial) to humans, but toxic to dogs.

  • What’s Your Impact? No more plastic tubes of toothpaste.

Additionally, fluoride toothpaste, by FDA requirements, has to be tested on animals. Since WELdental Toothpaste Tablets contain nHap instead of fluoride, it does not have to be tested and is cruelty-free.

The Good:

Zero Waste, no plastic packaging

nHap, a cruelty-free option that strengthens (remineralizes) teeth, instead of fluoride

Foams up quickly, not too powdery

Whitening tablet toothpaste!

Cheapest of the tablet options so far 😍

The Bad:

Pricey to be green with toothpaste tablet

Maybe we’ll try the peppermint next time…

The Experience

Context: We have been on a zero-waste toothpaste kick between reviewing Bite and Chomp. We wanted to find brands that use an ingredient that strengthens teeth, an alternative to fluoride, which led us to Nano Hydroxyapatite. Enter WELdental:

  • Less powdery than Chomp but a less firm than Bite, these tablets are the Goldilocks of the three

  • The cinnamon is different from cinnamon flavored gum…not bad, but not as great

  • We love that WELdental has whitening formulated into its nHap tablets (like Chomp, but not Bite)

  • Foams up nicely

  • Teeth feel clean and pretty fresh after a rinse and swish

The Cost

Each of the WELdental tablets are good for one brush. After a bit of work, we found that each brush uses 0.5grams of traditional gel toothpaste, so 365 grams per year if you brush twice a day.

Money Report: WELdental Chewtab toothpaste that provides both whitening and nHap is cheaper than other zero-waste options. Unfortunately, tablet toothpaste is just more expensive than gel toothpaste. That said, WELdental is the cheapest of the bunch so far.

Our Recommendation:

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
