Grove Collaborative Seedling Toilet Paper Review 2024 | Bamboo, Eco-friendly Toilet Paper

We tried Grove Collaborative’s Bamboo toilet paper.

The Top Line:

BUY. If you can give up the softness of the drugstore brands, then Grove Collaborative Bamboo toilet paper should be in your bathroom. It’s cost effective and made of super fast growing bamboo, which is much kinder to the earth than cutting down trees. Plus, the packaging is all paper — zero plastic.

Note that Grove Collaborative has a membership, with a generous trial period. EVEN with the cost of membership, and if you just buy TP for one person from Grove, the cost is still below average TP prices. Check out our Grove Collaborative Haul review here.

[Update 2024]: Due to high price inflation, we updated our cost comparison grids for toilet paper reviews. Our review for Grove Collaborative did not change as it still remains a generous roll and among the cheapest in Bamboo toilet paper.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $8.95 for 8 rolls; $15.95 for 16 rolls; $24.95 for 24 rolls

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Pretty clean since it’s tree-free. Made of 100% responsibly-grown bamboo.

  • Packaging: Plastic free — comes in a paper box. Box is recyclable and made of 100% recycled materials. Bonus points.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: We have ordered from Grove Collaborative three times. The desktop site is growing on us and is better than mobile, but still not intuitive to navigate.

  • PSA: The subscriptions are applied automatically. There is a ton of flexibility - but it’s on you to remember. If you try to order before your next due shipment, all of the items are pre-loaded into your cart. We like the thought behind it, but would prefer opt-in versus opt-out.

  • Good to know: Refills and subscription is the name of the game at Grove Collaborative. They try to reduce packaging but sometimes unsuccessfully.

Grove Collaborative is a B-corporation. Normal corporations have a goal to make more money for their owners. B-Corps do that too, but they also set specific, social and ethical goals such as governance, environment, and workers. Read about Grove Collaborative’s goals here.

  • Coupons: None that we know if - but you get a hefty amount of gifts the first time you order.

  • What’s Your Impact? No plastic wrapping that comes standard with store-bought TP. The paper is made from bamboo and packaging is all recyclable. Bamboo grows really quickly and requires less water and resources to grow, which makes it significantly more sustainable than tree-based toilet paper.

The Experience

Context: We have used Scott, Seventh Generation, Cottonelle, Charmin and just about every drugstore brand that exists. This was our experience with Grove’s TP:

  • No shredding - pretty tough material

  • It feels like a better version of Who Gives a Crap but with the bamboo materials of PlantPaper

  • Rolls are decently sized and last longer than most of the others we’ve tried

  • Rolls come with no wrapping, which kind of like (save paper!)

The Cost

One source suggests that the average person uses 100 rolls of toilet paper per year, so we are going to use that for cost comparison. We’ll compare mostly online brands which we’ve reviewed the past (and recently done a big bamboo toilet paper roundup of the best!), including Go No. 2, Who Gives a Crap, PlantPaper, Better Way and Silk ‘n Soft. We compared Grove Collaborative Bamboo TP to drugstore brands like Quilted Northern.

Money Report: Grove Collaborative remains one of the cheapest bamboo options we reviewed, still cheaper than Quilted Northern after our 2024 cost update. The membership is only $19.99, so we believe even if you run a 1-person household and JUST buy TP from Grove, the cost of membership is worth it.

The Good:

Cheapest option in our green comparison!

Rolls are also one of the biggest - more bang for your buck

Made of super regenerative bamboo

Grove Collaborative/Seedling is a B-corp

Packaging is not only recyclable but also made of 100% recycled materials.

The Bad:

It’s not going to be Cottonelle when it comes to softness.

Our Recommendation:
