Protector DEET-Free Mosquito and Insect Repellent Review | Natural, Sustainable Bug Spray

Protector DEET-Free Mosquito and Insect Repellent Review | Natural, Sustainable Bug Spray

The Top Line:

100% a BUY from us. The DEET-free, natural Protector Mosquito and Insect Repellent is a steal when it comes to price and effectiveness. It is also made up of all-natural ingredients, relying on very pleasant-smelling essential oils to repel pesky bugs. The one drawback is that the vessel is plastic and not aluminum.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: Single bottle for $8.99; 2-pack for $14.99 and a 3-pack for $22.95

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Really clean! Mainly made up of essential oils and some preservatives, the ingredients are all very basic!

  • Packaging: Plastic bottle/ships from Amazon.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Amazon!

  • What’s Your Impact? DEET is a chemical that has controversial studies around it. Additionally, some people are exceptionally allergic to DEET.

We personally still will use DEET-based repellent in areas where malaria or other mosquito-born illnesses are prevalent, but we love alternatives for areas where that is not a concern.

Mosquitos love us, so we make good use of this non-chemical, all-natural option!

The Good:

Very nice scent of vanilla and lemon

Cheap as chips - even cheaper than OFF! Deet-based bug spray

It has worked on all kinds of random insect bites in the US, from mosquitos to chiggers

Essential oils and natural ingredients make up the ingredients for the spray

The Bad:

It’s in a plastic bottle

The Experience

Context: we get bitten a lot! We have used mostly DEET-based sprays, not having much luck in the natural arena. But when we started using DEET-free Protector Mosquito and Bug repellent a few years ago, we really liked the results:

  • For starters, we really like this scent! It’s almost like lemon vanilla, which is odd… since both of those are ingredients. 😊

  • The spray is light.

  • In the damp northeast and in the forests of California, Protector’s Bug Repellent worked like a dream! No bug bites. Success.

  • Also, we really like the scent.

The Cost

We compared DEET-free/natural Protector’s Mosquito and Insect Repellent to other natural bug repellent brands like Nantucket, Badger and Marrick Fly Away Bug Spray, along with OFF! which is DEET-based spray.

Money Report: Wow, the Protector brand mosquito repellent is even cheaper than OFF! !

Our Recommendation:

100% a BUY from us. The DEET-free, natural Protector Mosquito and Insect Repellent is a steal when it comes to price and effectiveness. It is also made up of all-natural ingredients, relying on very pleasant-smelling essential oils to repel pesky bugs. The one drawback is that the vessel is plastic and not aluminum.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
