Truman's Reporting for Doodie Toilet Bars 2020 Review - Sustainable, Compostable Toilet Cleaner Pods

Truman's Reporting for Doodie Toilet Bars 2020 Review - Sustainable, Compostable Toilet Cleaner Pods

The Top Line: While we love the humor in the brand, this stuff is crazy expensive. And we’re not sure it cleans our toilet bowl any better — and we have to do this weekly? Unfortunately, Truman’s Reporting for Doodie is a HARD NO in our book.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $21.00 for 18 toilet cleaning bars.

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Pretty clean. Recyclable packaging, no plastic bottles. Unclear if the ingredients are super clean though — no mention of biodegradability of the bars themselves on their website.

  • Packaging: Minimal packaging, all recyclable. No plastic.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: OK eCommerce experience — we had some issues with creating an account, but customer support was VERY fast to respond (we heard from them in a few hours). Shipping was not super fast, took almost a week for the product to ship out (we think it might be the hand-signed card that slowed them down?)

  • Coupons: Discounts offered for bundles and membership.

  • Whats Your Impact? Traditional liquid toilet bowl cleaners and pods come in alot of packaging — plastic bottles, plastic wrapping and things that are flushed down the drain.

The Efficacy:

Context: We currently use Seventh Generation liquid toilet cleaning (roughly using 1/2 a bottle a year for two toilets).

  • We are instructed to use 1 toilet bar a week, dropping it directly into the toilet bowl to let it dissolve and “do the cleaning for us”

  • We still needed to use our toilet brush, so unclear if this saved any time for us

  • Our toilet did not appear to be any cleaner than normal

The Cost:

Context: We assumed that an average family of 4 would need to clean 3 toilets, and compared Truman’s Reporting for Doodie toilet bars against popular toilet cleaners: Kaboom Scrub Free Toilet Cleaner System, Chlorox ToiletWand, Lysol No Mess Auto Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Gel Stamps, and Seventh Generation Toilet Bowl Cleaner.

Money Thoughts: Truman’s Reporting for Doodie is an insanely expensive way to keep your toilet clean—we’re not sure the funny name and branding is worth it.

Toilet Pods 2.png

The Good:

✔ Pre-measured pods reduce overuse of cleaner (which most people are guilty of)

✔ Zero waste packaging and product

✔ Very light scents that do not overpower

✔ We love the branding — Reporting for Doodie made us chuckle

The Bad:

The price is too damn high!

Did not leaving us feel like we had an extra clean toilet…especially given the price

You still need to clean weekly and likely use a brush (no convenience benefit to offset the price)

Unclear if the formula is very clean or biodegradable

Our Recommendation:

While we love the humor in the brand, this is crazy expensive. And we’re not sure it cleans our toilet bowl any better — and we have to do this weekly? Unfortunately, Reporting for Doodie is a HARD NO in our book.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
